Where art meets fashion

In the period around the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, from early 2010 to mid 2011, Lu Schaper (top left in the picture) worked as a freelance artist with the famous high-end fashion chain Shanghai Story. She was invited to bring in her artist's point of view and local Shanghai experience, which resulted in about a dozen of scarf designs, based on paintings she created for this purpose. The themes for the scarves were varied, and included for instance a Puxi/Pudong (Old and New Shanghai) comparison, a motive inspired by the expo buildings from twenty different countries, and a classical Chinese Buddhist theme with seven lotus flowers. These silk and pashmina scarves have been selling very well in the various stores of this chain, including their shops at the Huahei Road (former Avenue Joffre), the main fashion shopping street of Shanghai. They have contributed considerably to the continued rise of this brand's reputation and success. Her work has also been used for interior and exterior decoration of shops and offices of Shanghai Story. She was interviewed in the popular blog Shanghaiist based on this work (link). It was an intensive and challenging, but satisfactory period for her as an artist, having to deal with market requirements and deadlines. She has said about it: "Painting is like playing a solo instrument, designing scarves is more like playing in an orchestra.".

Lu Schaper is no longer working with Shanghai Story, but she still has plenty of ideas to use her unique art, with both Oriental and Western influences and experience,  for high quality fashion and interior decoration purposes. Examples could be scarves, dresses, umbrellas, handbags, jewelry, pillows, sheets, curtains, china-ware, book covers, CD covers, and so on, either for the public or as representation gifts. If a company is interested to pursue these ideas together with her, you are welcome to contact her by email (Chinese or English).

(wikipedia link).

So far we have translated the mandarin word "lus", the name of our gallery, with heron. However, as happens frequently in mandarin, the same word is used for different animals. In this case, not just heron, but also e.g. stork and spoonbill. Just yesterday we found out that the spoonbill (and therefore lus) is officially the national bird of the Netherlands.... (wikipedia link).

Galerie LuS - waarom LuS (why LuS)?

Waarom heet onze galerie LuS?

Olieverfschilderij

Chinese wikipedia link hier.

=======================================================================

Why did we name our gallery LuS? In mandarin, lus (鹭鸶) is the word for the Chinese heron, a bird that I have drawn very often in my formative years. When I got to be known in Shanghai for my columns in magazines and on the internet, I called myself Haishang Lus (海上鹭鸶), the heron above the sea, with Haishang (海上) being a variation on Shanghai (上海), the city I was born in. And since I have called myself Lu Schaper in the Netherlands after my marriage, the choice for LuS was a logical one.

One of my early works from the nineties, Listening wind (听风》- We often see this bird in Kampen - is it fate?

Critics in Shanghai have said that I represent the renewal of the original Shanghai art movement "Haishang " 海上画派 of the previous century, a mixture of Eastern and Western styles representing the colonization of Shanghai in the early 20th century. The Chinese name of our gallery was also created by a prominent artist Liu Hai Su 刘海粟 of this movement in Chinese calligraphy for my father's gallery in Shanghai in the 80's. This is the first art gallery in Shanghai after the Cultural Revolution. The gallery is located in the most famous shopping street Avenue Joffre (霞飞路) inside the French concession.

Presentation Transcript

  • 19. shanghaiist

Fashion watch: Shanghai story scarves

With the unpredictable weather these days, why not bring up the one fashion accessory that's timeless? Scarves. They don't know the seasons. They don't know the weather. They don't need to - not when they're always 'in'. We caught up with Lu Schaper, a free-lance artist for the famous high end fashion chain Shanghai Story. Since 2010, her art designs have been used to create a series of famous silk and pashmina scarves, including a special series for the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into designing scarves?
I am a professional artist, and was approached by the famous company Shanghai Story, who found me via internet. They proposed that I make designs for them as a free-lance artist. As Shanghai is my home town, and I know the brand pretty well, I decided to embark on this new line of art, also to increase my exposure.

Shanghai world expo
Invited to design ,combined with different venues in the design of the elements, as well as the countries' national flags

Where do you get your inspiration for the patterns?
The first two were inspired by the Expo 2010, the first one has as its theme the HangPu river, with both PuXi and PuDong on it, representing both side of our city. The second one is more abstract, but inspire by the many different buildings at the Expo. After these, series are planned around Shanghai stories and qipao girls, in line with my paintings: delicate, luscious and trendy.

Shanghai, This is the city where I was born, This painting of my express the new view of the bund of Shanghai

How does an idea go from inspiration to finished product? Can you explain a bit about your creative process?
As a professional artist I am used to translating my creative impulses into paintings. Designing scarves is somewhat different: I have to pay even more attention to colour schemes and whether it would be suitable for wearing. In addition, there are time schedules to meet for the production. Painting is like playing a solo instrument, designing scarves is more like playing in an orchestra.

How would you describe the style of your designs?
The style is very much akin to my painting art, a style which we have named Shanghai Expressionism: expressionistic, usually colourful, but with clear Shanghai themes.
Why choose Shanghai to sell these?
Because it is my home town, and because the company who approached me is from there. The scarves are also for sale in branches of Shanghai Story outside Shanghai. In addition, my style has clear Shanghai elements.

How did you find a collaboration opportunity with the Shanghai Story Fashion Chain?
They approached me after finding my art on the internet.
What do you love most about your job?
This offers me a new page in my career, I always like to try different things. More people can enjoy my art this way, compared to making and selling one painting.

How has the reception to your designs been?
The first designs are selling very well, they are very successful, and the company has decided to use my art as decoration in their shops and office.
What are your future plans for your brand?/How do you hope to expand your line in the future?
Shanghai Story is a clear example of high class products made in China, aiming for trendy women from all over the world. They have a wide of line of products, and it is possible that my designs will find broader applications in this company.

http://news.sina.com.cn/s/2008-03-05/105115080659.shtml

BY 天 乙
